Patches Are for Pirates

With every rainstorm we field calls from folks asking if we could come out and “patch” their basement wall. Now if we were in the roofing business I could understand where a patch might be applicable. But when it comes to a below grade (basement) foundation wall a patch is not recommended.

A patch job on a roof will still allow water to run downhill and into the guttering system thus carrying the water away. A patch on your foundation wall will create a damming effect, as the water will have no place to go (which is actually part of the reason it’s coming in to begin with).

Water will collect and remain around a patched foundation wall and the surface area (yard or garden) will remain spongy. The spongy earth creates ideal conditions for termites, mosquitoes, and other pests. And as long as the water is building at the foundation wall it won’t be long until it finds another weak spot for easy entry into your basement.

There are no shortcuts when it comes to proper waterproofing, they have all been tried and failed. Without proper drainage of both the wall and footing a patch is better served over a Pirate’s eye. Doing it right is the most effective and least expensive option in the long run. Give us a call and we’ll do it right!
